Missy Elliott is going to make history at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. The first female Hip Hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame will also become the first female rapper to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Over the course of her career, Elliott has been nominated for 41 VMAs, winning seven. This year will mark the rapper’s first performance at the VMAs since 2006.
“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” Viacom’s Head of Music and Music Talent Bruce Gillmer said in a statement. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”
“I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award,” she wrote. “I Thank my FANS ‘Supafriends’ who fought diligently to see this day come @KidFury @crissles who rooted for years! I am crying right now so thankful.”
