Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has confirmed his retirement from international duty with Spain.
The decision comes as no surprise, given Pique already confirmed the World Cup in Russia would be his last major tournament.
The 2010 World Cup winner said and I quote
“I talked to Luis Enrique a few days ago,” he said at a Press conference.
He called me and I told him that I’d already made my decision some time ago. It was a very beautiful period, which I’m very happy about but now I want to focus on Barca.
“I have several years left at Barca, I hope it’s a case of the more the merrier, and I want to enjoy them.”
However, the former Manchester United defender insisted that he felt “fortunate for being a part of the national team during such a beautiful and successful time” and said “the decision had already been made a long time ago and it was well thought out”.
Pique retires having made 102 appearances for his country, winning 73 of those since his debut in 2009.
