Former American President Barack Obama paid tribute to Nipsey Hussle in a letter that was read at a memorial for the late musician and community activist.

Hussle’s close friend and business partner, Karen Civil, was emotional as she read the note and shared that Obama wrote the note that very morning. Obama praised Hussle’s work supporting his community, and said he was introduced to his music by his daughters, Malia and Sasha, but had never met him.

“I’ve heard his music through my daughters and after his passing, I had the chance to hear more about his transformation and his community work,” Obama wrote. “While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood where he grew up and see only gangs, bullets, and despair, Nipsey saw potential. He saw hope. … I hope his memory inspires more good work in Crenshaw and communities like it.”

Rest on king.
