It’s official! Akon is building his own city. The global superstar announced Monday that he is finalizing plans for the establishment of Akon City in Senegal.
In an Instagram post of a photo from the deal-finalizing moment, Akon told fans he was “looking forward to hosting you there in the future.”
Akon, who is of Senegalese decent, originally announced plans for the futuristic “Crypto city” in 2018 saying that the city would be built on a 2,000-acre land gifted to him by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall. The new city would also trade exclusively in his own digital cash currency called AKoin, he said.
Akon’s plans are to build in the village of Mbodiene, with climate-conscious appproaches at the helm. The agreement with tourism company SAPCO, according to a separate Jakarta Post report, is a “memorandum of understanding.”
Akon remains invested in his community. In 2016, he secured a $1 billion credit line to back his solar project, which aims to provide electricity to 600 million Africans.
